Customer Questions & Answers

  • Question: Does this switch support IEEE 802.3af mode A?

Answer: The manufacturer's specifications say that it's Standard: 802.3 af compliant, not sure about the mode A.
  • Question: Will this work with Ubiquiti UAC-AP-PRO?

Answer: I have long-range Ubiquiti devices and could only power one at a time with this switch and no other devices with PoE. Ubiquiti comes with injectors, but this switch isn't very good, and the power adapter connection is so loose it falls right out.
  • Question: Do I still need to use a PoE injector to each camera if I have this switch?

Answer: As the other answers point out, you can use the 4 PoE ports for a camera. Some cheap injectors are dangerous for your equipment. Be sure the injector implements the IEEE 802.3af or 802.3at standard, and then you'll be safe.
  • Question: What version is this switch/v1 or v1.8? I see two versions available on the TP-Link site.

    Answer: Mine is v1.
  • Question: Does the TL-SG1008MP V2 have layer 2 or 3 capabilities?

Answer: This switch is unmanaged, and it must be connected to a router.
  • Question: Which side is the inport on?

Answer: Please clarify your question. What do you call the inport?
  • Question: Can TL-SG1008P power a 24v AP on the PoE port?

Answer: Specs say 15.4 max per port, so no.
  • Question: So this is not fanless, correct?

    Answer: It is fan.
  • Question: My Ethernet over coax devices require 10/100 can I switch off gigabit?

Answer: You cannot switch it off, but this device will negotiate down to 10/100 if the endpoint does not support gigabit. I have a 10/100 device plugged in, and the gigabit light does not illuminate for that port.
  • Question: Can I power this switch with PoE injector adapter and then have the switch provide PoE to devices that are connected to it?

Answer: No. You have to power it with the power adapter. We have PoE on our ports, but it wouldn't power the switch. In fact, make sure not to plug in an inbound PoE cable to one of the four PoE ports. This will cause the switch to misbehave. I found this behavior on multiple TP-Link switches.

TP-Link Switches TL-SG1210P Editorial Review

**** The TP-Link TL-SG1218MPE switch has received a largely positive reception from users, particularly praised for its functionality in powering devices through Power over Ethernet (PoE). Many users report success in connecting multiple Raspberry Pi boards and PoE cameras, indicating its robust capability to support a small home or business network setup. The switch operates quietly, which is a significant advantage for users who prioritize a low-noise environment. While the switch is marketed as "smart managed," it has created some confusion among users. The term has been interpreted differently, leading some to assume it is a managed switch when it is actually unmanaged. This miscommunication surrounding its classification prompted some customers to voice concerns, particularly regarding the product description. Even so, those who understand its specifications appreciate the flexibility it offers, such as having static IP settings that work well in a dedicated environment. In terms of performance, the switch has demonstrated reliability over long periods, with users reporting no burnout issues after Consistent 24/7 operation. Its ability to handle multiple devices without overheating and to provide gigabit speeds has contributed to a favorable view among first-time users of IP-based networks. The user-friendly setup process, although occasionally hampered by confusing app support, was generally described as straightforward, which benefits newcomers to networking technology. A slight drawback noted by some customers is the size of the power supply, which seems oversized compared to the switch itself. Additionally, while the switch performs well for most setups, a few users have experienced minor issues with specific camera models losing frames, but this seems to be attributed to the cameras rather than the switch itself. Overall, the TP-Link TL-SG1218MPE emerges as a reliable choice for home users and small to medium-sized businesses seeking efficient PoE solutions with minimal management requirements. **
