Revealing global e-commerce trends: which countries are the most ‘shopaholic’

The rising popularity of the internet, alongside an increasing use of handheld devices, has meant that it has never been easier for people across the globe to shop online. Whether it’s treating themselves to a new item of clothing from their favorite overseas brand, or buying something for a specialist hobby that’s only available in a particular country, e-commerce has provided a wealth of opportunities for people to purchase goods from across the globe from the comfort of their home.

With online shopping growing rapidly in popularity in recent years, recording an average of $3,913,058.90 in e-commerce revenue annually, we at Ubuy wanted to know how many global online purchases each country records each year in order to see which countries are the most ‘shopaholic’. To do this, we looked at how much people actually spend in each country to work out spending per capita, then compared this to how much people earn annually. Based on the results of this data, the countries where e-commerce spending is highest in comparison to annual salary will be deemed the biggest ‘shopaholics’.

Methodology

Annual spending figures per country were taken from eCommerceDB, population data was taken from WorldBank, and each country’s income data was collected from World Population Review. All data was collected in February 2023 and was the most up-to-date data available at the time of collection.

Global e-commerce spending habits - 5.7% of average income spent on e-commerce

In order to contextualize each country’s online spending habits individually, we first looked at the total annual e-commerce revenue for the world, alongside determining the average annual spend per capita, and the percentage of income spent based on the average annual household income.

Our research found that, globally, an average of $3,913,058.90 is recorded in e-commerce revenue per year, with the most recent population figures showing a global population size of 7,888,408,686 people. This is equivalent to $496 spent per capita, which, when broken down in comparison to the average annual income ($8,742) is approximately 5.7% of an average income spent on just e-commerce alone worldwide.

With e-commerce clearly proving itself to be widely popular in each country, many may be wondering how they can also buy goods online from other countries. Thankfully, it is now easier than ever before to buy goods from abroad online, and there are an abundance of stores that are willing to ship overseas directly.

For those that may not ship directly overseas themselves, Ubuy can help consumers to purchase goods that would otherwise be region-locked. Ubuy offers easy and simple access to thousands of stores globally across all categories. The goods are purchased through Ubuy’s site in the same way that you would purchase any other goods online, and are then shipped to users through Ubuy’s series of international warehouses.

Using Ubuy, users can shop from abroad for over 100 million products, ranging from exercise bikes to LED strip lights and beyond, all from the comfort of their own home. This allows consumers to purchase items that would ordinarily be unavailable to them if shopping from the retailer directly, and opens a wide range of possibilities for those looking to spend money online.

Lastly, we have also created a brain teasing puzzle for our readers to test their puzzle-solving abilities. For this puzzle, we require challengers to attempt to spot the smartphone among the shopping bags in the image below. And to make things more complicated, the ocean is filled with identical shopping bags!

So, how long did it take you to spot the mobile phone?

At Ubuy HQ, this puzzle had us scratching our heads for an average of 35 seconds. If you still can’t find the secret smartphone, there’s no need to panic – take a peek at the solved puzzle below:

Conclusion
In this research, we were able to identify which countries are driving up the most e-commerce revenue, alongside being able to distinguish which populations are the most ‘shopaholic’ – spending the biggest percentage of their income on online shopping. This was a fascinating piece of research that really highlighted the significance of e-commerce and cross-border online retail as a global phenomenon. Each country in our research recorded at least some degree of e-commerce revenue, with some contributing in the millions of dollars.

At Ubuy, we’re proud to assist online shoppers with their purchases, providing them with access to thousands of online stores that would otherwise not be available to them due to regional limitations.
