Customer Questions & Answers

Question:
What is the SUIZAN Kanna Japanese Wood Planer 2.4 used for?
Answer: The SUIZAN Kanna Japanese Wood Planer 2.4 is designed for precise woodworking tasks, particularly in creating smooth surfaces on wooden boards. This hand block plane excels at shaping and finishing wood, making it ideal for carpenters, furniture makers, and hobbyists. With its sharp blade and traditional design, it allows for greater control over depth and pressure, giving users the ability to achieve a fine finish. Whether you're working on intricate joinery or simply prepping wood for finishing, this planer offers the precision and quality needed for professional results. -
Question:
What materials can be used with the SUIZAN Kanna Wood Planer?
Answer: The SUIZAN Kanna Wood Planer works best with softwood and hardwood materials. Woods such as pine, cedar, oak, and maple are suitable for planing, allowing users to smooth and shape a variety of projects. It is essential to select clean wood without knots or defects to achieve the best results. By using the Kanna on properly prepared lumber, you can enhance the aesthetics and fit of your woodworking creations, whether you are crafting furniture or quick repairs around the shop. -
Question:
How do I maintain the sharpness of the blade?
Answer: To maintain the sharpness of the SUIZAN Kanna blade, regular honing and occasional sharpening are recommended. Users should ensure the blade is cleaned after each use to prevent resin buildup. Honing can be performed with a sharpening stone at a consistent angle to keep the edge keen. If the blade becomes nicked or dull, it may require more intensive sharpening. Maintaining a sharp blade not only enhances performance but also reduces physical effort and improves finish quality on your woodworking projects. -
Question:
Is the SUIZAN Kanna suitable for beginners?
Answer: Yes, the SUIZAN Kanna is suited for beginners as well as professionals. Its traditional design facilitates straightforward operation, allowing newcomers to grasp woodworking fundamentals. The control provided by the hand plane encourages experimentation with different techniques, fostering learning and skill development. Beginners can start with simple projects like edge smoothing or board preparation before advancing to more complex tasks. This versatility makes it an excellent choice to accompany novice woodworkers on their journey. -
Question:
Can the SUIZAN Kanna be used on plywood?
Answer: While the SUIZAN Kanna can technically be used on plywood, it is not the ideal choice due to the layered nature of the material. Plywood may cause tear-out or rough edges when planed with a traditional hand plane. For best results, consider using the Kanna on solid wood where its design can truly shine. If you do use it on plywood, ensure the grain is oriented correctly and use lighter passes to minimize issues, ensuring a smoother finish where possible. -
Question:
What is the ideal grip position for using the Kanna?
Answer: The ideal grip for using the SUIZAN Kanna involves holding the plane firmly with both hands. Your dominant hand should be positioned on the front grip or knob, guiding the tool forward, while the other hand rests on the rear handle to provide stability and control. This technique allows for accurate planing while maintaining consistent pressure on the workpiece. Practicing this grip will enhance your ability to maneuver the plane smoothly across different wood surfaces for a professional finish. -
Question:
What is the difference between the SUIZAN Kanna and modern planes?
Answer: The SUIZAN Kanna differs from modern planes in its craftsmanship and design philosophy. While modern planes often rely on metal for durability and ease of use, the Kanna is traditionally crafted from wood and features a simple, efficient blade design. This focus on traditional methods provides a unique tactile experience and can produce superior finishes due to the control it offers. Woodworkers who appreciate traditional techniques often favor the Kanna for its ability to deliver a more authentic and nuanced woodworking experience. -
Question:
Is it necessary to set the Kanna blade depth?
Answer: Yes, setting the Kanna blade depth is fundamental for achieving optimal results. Proper blade depth allows you to control how much material is removed during planing, enabling smoother cuts and a better finish. Adjusting the depth according to the material and the desired outcome is crucial—more tactile feedback and control result when it is set correctly. Beginners may start with lighter depths and adjust as they gain familiarity with the tool, gradually learning how to achieve varying thicknesses and finishes as they work. -
Question:
What surfaces are best for using the SUIZAN Kanna?
Answer: The best surfaces for using the SUIZAN Kanna are those that are flat and free of defects. Ideally, you’ll want to plane the end grain or face grain of solid wood surfaces for the best results. Avoid using it on surfaces with knots or severe imperfections, as these may affect the plane's performance. A well-prepared board can be transformed into a smoothly finished piece, whether it’s for furniture or cabinetry, and employing the Kanna correctly elevates your woodwork to a more professional level. -

SUIZAN Japanese Planes SK-003 Editorial Review
The SUIZAN Japanese Wood Block Plane Kanna 2 Inch 50mm Hand Planer is a highly recommended tool by customers who have used it. The blade is sharp out-of-the-box which glides smoothly on hard maple after proper depth adjustment. The plane body (dai) is about 63mm and the blade width is a bit over 50mm. However, adjusting the blade might require some skills as it needs gentle force to hold down the top of the blade piece when taking out the blade. Placing the blade should be done manually to adjust the protrusion. One downside is that the blade cannot be removed for sharpening, which some customers didn't appreciate. It weighs 5.6 ounces and is easy to use with no screws for depth adjustment, just tapping the block with a hammer.
