Instruction & Study Editorial Review
The Hal Leonard Adult Piano Method - Book 1 is well-received among both beginners and those with some previous experience in piano playing. This instructional book aims to facilitate a smooth learning curve by developing foundational skills while simultaneously engaging learners with enjoyable songs. Reviewers appreciate the book's structured approach, which carefully builds on previously introduced techniques, allowing students to progress at a comfortable pace. Many users noted that the initial lessons use large notes with letter names, which helps novices familiarize themselves with keyboard and note relations without the immediate pressure of traditional sheet music. The transition to reading music is gradual, making it accessible to those who might be intimidated by standard notation. However, some reviewers pointed out that the book may not provide enough instruction on rhythm values and rests for total novices, which could pose a challenge for learners completely new to reading music. The selection of songs is another highlight, described as "brilliant" and reflective of popular tunes that resonate with learners, providing motivation to practice. Users appreciate that the book includes improvisational exercises, which can help foster creativity and ease the transition to more advanced methods, such as lead sheets. Despite its strengths, a common concern among reviewers is that the pace may be a bit fast for those who prefer to approach learning in a more deliberate manner. Those seeking a slower progression might find themselves moving through the material more quickly than anticipated. Nevertheless, the overall sentiment remains positive, with many expressing satisfaction with their learning experiences and progress. **
