Drama Editorial Review
Cabaret is a true classic that holds up despite the passage of time. The film features great performances and songs, and has a good book. Liza Minelli and Joel Grey are at their very best. One reviewer wished that the film matched up better with the stage play, but still recommended it for the Fossie-style dancing. The film's quality and clarity are fantastic, better than the reviewer remembers from the theater. The Blu-ray version features a 5.1 DTS Master Audio soundtrack, which is uncompressed and lossless, offering far superior sound quality when compared to the compressed stereo soundtrack of the DVD version. The greater storage capacity of the Blu-ray disk also allows for Dolby TrueHD and other lossless soundtracks, which are far superior to DVD soundtracks. The disk also includes extra features that tell the history of this groundbreaking movie. Overall, Cabaret is an all-time favorite of many reviewers, featuring great music and lyrics that hit home. While it is not a light-hearted romp of joy, the movie is a recommended product of its time and ahead of its time in depicting early Nazism and other important topics.
