Dark Fantasy Editorial Review
**** "Eldritch," the second installment in Keri Lake's *The Eating Woods* series, has garnered significant attention for its immersive storytelling and psychological depth, though it has sparked mixed feelings among readers regarding its narrative structure. The book delves deeply into the trauma of its characters, particularly through Zevander's harrowing backstory. Critics have lauded Lake's ability to evoke empathy with vivid and grueling details, bringing the characters' darkest corners to light while maintaining a gothic atmosphere throughout the story. While readers have appreciated the intricate world-building and the introduction of new perspectives, such as Khazimir's point of view, some have found the narrative occasionally disjointed. The frequent shifts between past and present timelines can disrupt pacing, leading some to feel detached from the immediate plot. There is a Consensus that although the character development is rich, at times it usurps the progression of the storyline, causing a sense of stagnation. Yet, many fans remain enamored with the emotional weight of the tale and the complexity of the characters, particularly Maevyth's growth and Raivox's charm. The juxtaposition of dark themes with moments of levity and connection amongst characters has captivated a good portion of the readership, ensuring this series remains a hit despite its flaws. The cliffhanger ending has left many eagerly anticipating the next installment, underscoring that Lake's storytelling prowess continues to resonate even as debates about its pacing and structure persist. Overall, "Eldritch" is positioned as both a continuation of dark fantasy elements and an exploration of the human psyche, solidifying its place in this compelling series. **
